Going to a birthday dinner for a friend tomorrow, and will be tasked with picking out a bottle of red for the table.

Most of the group leans towards Sangiovese/Chanti, and could always play it safe with the Chianti Classico, but I’d like to mix it up while still honoring the same vibe. We’ll be eating caviar and steak.

What bottle of red would you choose? Price point is around >= $150 which definitely limits options for this restaurant….

Domaine Galevan is a phenomenal QPR option. Amazing family shop currently being run by a mother and her two sons.

The prices are kind of nuts.

Sub-$150 not a lot of options, I’d probably get a bottle of the Dupre Morgon or the Villeneuve Cab Franc, and then want to see the whites + bubbles.

Also, it’s above your price point, but old Terre Rouge can be incredible. Depending on which specific vineyard it is (esp. if it’s Sentinel Oak or Ascent), might try to convince the group to splurge on that.

Such a strange list. The gap between $45 to $2k leaves a lot to be desired. These are good wines though. I would say the Kermit Lynch CDR is the way to go. Though it’s also overpriced imo.

Interesting that Patrimony Cab Franc is listed twice for the same vintage at different prices.

    Brutal markups.

And the wine biz wonders why people are getting out of the habit of ordering a bottle with dinner.

Plenty of good BDX there, prices aside.

I’d get something nice for $130 at a wine shop and pay corkage if that an option. Some of the prices on this list are unconscionable for what they are.

I would drink a beer. Those prices are fkn nutso.

  7. I would get wine by the glass with your courses here. The bottle prices are marked up way to much to participate

The CDP and the Vacqueyras and the Brouilly would be my picks.

Beer and cocktails. Well, first I’m seeing if they allow corkage and, if so, I’m bringing my own wine. If not, beer and cocktails. That is a terrible, terrible list in terms of both pricing and selection.

  10. Given the brutal prices on wine, do they allow BYOB? Even if they charge $50 corkage, you could get a much nicer bottle of wine like that.

The Hartford Court Pinot is over a 3x markup from retail and more than 4x wholesale….. better to pay corkage…… ouch

The Cotes de Beaune 2019 or the Oregon pinot noir.
