Mounted these floating shelves adjacent to the pantry. When shelves and counter were empty, something about the shelf placement felt off. Upon filling the space (using random items placed as visuals) it seems better, but I'm still not sold.
Should these shelves be centered over the countertop rather than butted up against the side of the pantry cabinet?
Additional info:
- The counter top is 4 1/2 feet (54"). Shelves are 4 feet (48").
- Pantry and base cabinets are standard 24" depth. Shelves are 12".
- Shelves are mounted higher than what you may traditionally recommend because the counter will hold other appliances that require higher clearance. The lower of the two shelves will be more functional in nature, but the top shelf will hold purely decorative items.
- I tried AI but still need more opinions. Though, I did use it to remove the light fixture in one of the photos specifically for this post to offer a less obstructed view.

I think they would look better if centered over the countertop, yes
Centered.
I don’t think it really needs to be centered. I think you need to stop treating it like it was centered. You need to create visual interest by switching up the heights of the items on the shelves. Everything is the same height so it reads like a mistake. I think even if you did center it, it would still feel off because of the large pantry on the side.
I don’t think it needs to be centered but I would put taller items near the cabinet. Like some books and a pictcher. And then taper down to end.
I don’t think they need to be centered. I think it’s just a matter of arranging the items correctly.
Keep the shelves where they are. Change what is displayed on them. Why are there so many single bowls????
Turn the wooden board/paddle on the bottom shelf upright. Put the white bowls in a cabinet. Basket goes away. Get a pothos for the bottom shelf and a small snake or zz plant for the top. Put them in pots that are not orange or brown or red. Something blue or green. Add a couple of cook books. Put the tallest items closer to the cabinets.
Do you use your bread machine and crock pot often enough to keep them out all the time? I try to keep as many appliances off the counter as possible – I know this doesn’t work in all kitchens but you seem to have decent cabinet space
Tbh all I can see is that gigantic light fixture. Maybe it’s a perspective thing, but it seems way too big for the space. Like a tall person would bump their head on it. It’s also very impractical for a kitchen where grease and dust settle one everything.
I think the shelves are fine, but are you using as storage or decoration? I would either switch to everyday items that make sense to have accessible all the time (like your regular dishes), or pick more visually interesting items if you are using it for decor primarily.
