Brought this bottle back from Japan earlier in the year. A interesting bottle, and the first I’ve had from this producer. I had heard Charlopin falls at the far end of the Burgundy producer spectrum as a modernist, producing rich, intense wines. I’d say this was 100% my experience, as this bottle was hedonistic, silky, concentrated (just teetering on too much). But a lovely pour, and I look forward to trying more bottles from Charlopin.

Appearance/Context: Extremely dense, ripe (almost overripe), powerful wine. The solar intensity of the 2022 vintage is on full display.

Nose: The aromatics are brooding and concentrated, with rich, dark medicinal cherry and fleshy ripe plum. There is a heavy violet floral component. The oak/vanilla adds a glossy polish over the fruit, adding an (almost sickly) sweet, creamy depth that surprisingly integrates well into the ripe fruit.

Blind, this would screams rich, ripe 2022 Saint-Émilion. It possesses a right-bank muscularity and a purple fruit core that seems to defy the traditional profile I’d expect of Pinot Noir.

Palate: The palate is dense and rich, mirroring the nose with dark cherry, plum, and a distinct zing of black pepper spice.

Structure & Finish: The tannins are firm yet the mouthfeel is supremely silky, possibly a result of Charlopin’s use of new oak and the high phenolic ripeness of the year. The finish is long, carrying that medicinal fruit and a peppery/vanilla note that lingers.
