Itโs news to me that you can get red from the Vinho Verde appellation!
Field blend of Alvarelhรฃo, Borraรงal, Pedral & Vinhรฃo, none of which I have tasted before. 100 year-old vines, no filtration, no added sulphites blah blah. Only 11.5% abv.
Very brooding, concentrated aroma. Dusty red cherry, cranberry, juicy raspberry, mulberry, pepper, rose petal. Hints of blood orange and a leafy note too.
Palate is full of flavour, a burst of cranberry mixed with some tar and black pepper. The pepper is quite prominent on the finish, adding a cool bitterness. Has a subtle silkiness and an elegance to the structure, which is further belied by crunchy acidity. I would not pin this as being only 11.5% abv as it is by no means watery. A fairly long finish that is almost salty.
This has real drive – it almost pulses in your mouth. Lip-smacking and delicious. This went great with a spinach & bolognese lasagna. Good value at $35 CAD.
