Vincent Girardin, Pouilly-Fuisse, Les Vieilles Vignes, Chardonnay, 2019, 13% abv.
Supposedly from ~50 year old vines. Picked from various biodynamically-farmed vineyards. Fermented and aged in barrel (10% new oak) for 14 months.
Nose: popped and poured, citrus closer to limes and grapefruit, hint of plastic on some inhalations. After some air time there is some crystalized vanilla and toasted broiche. What a difference some air makes.
Palate: medium body, initial palate is similar to the nose with some sweetened ripe lime juice, grapefruit citrus, supple golden apple juice, which is all accompanied by sweet oak vanillins, toasted almonds, cream, diluted chocolate caramel, and dessert brioche. As the temperature gets closer to a cool room temperature, the sugar-coated brioche races ahead several spots in the line of flavors. Nice, I like that determination.
Finish: medium, the fruit elements are more prevalent with modest hints of diluted vanilla and sweet toast.
Vernacular: nose showing good primary and secondary elements. Medium body, light to moderate acidity, mostly secondary, minimal minerality and alcohol. Medium finish, dry, reflects palate.
I was pleasantly surprised with this oaked pooyay-fyoosay as I am still out on Vincent Girdain. Bought this for about KRW₩80K, or about USD$57, in South Korea.
