Moving into this house with a huge combined living room & dining room situation. How can I make it look cozy/Academia esque without buying furniture like these chunky leather couches? Thinking of putting bookshelves on the back wall where the dining table is. In the first photo, the left edge of the wall is cut as it ends there and open to serves as an entrance from the main door.

I’m a huge fan of library walls/rooms, so I’d put bookcases everywhere I could…just pointing out that if you set them up at the back of the dining room, when you add a dining table it might not sit centered under the light. If you’ve got a big living room, you might want to add bookcases there.
I prefer cool colors myself, but if you’re going for cozy, you might want to paint a warmer and/or much deeper shade.
It looks like a really nice house. Enjoy!
Sounds great! Bookshelves on the back wall will look nice. Try adding soft lights and plants for a cozy feel!
We’ve had Ikea bookcases, almost floor to ceiling in two houses. The current ones are 10yo, loaded shelves, and look fine. Cases made to fit into a corner are very expensive. Just use a narrow case and turn it at an angle. Our handyman fastened the shelves together as well as to the wall and also lined the top of all the shelves with plywood so nothing would fall down the opening behind the angled case. You can get a one- shelf case to add to the top if you literally want floor to ceiling. People add bases if needed underneath and molding to make them look built in. Our library is somewhat larger than your alcove, but not a lot. We have a pair of small upholstered armchairs, a large shared ottoman, a small console table with two shallow drawers for bookmarks, pens and sticky notes, and two floor pharmacy lamps. Have fun with it.
