We’re renting a home in the Northeast and are in the process of setting up our terrace (which is over the garage). We’re hoping to create a bit of privacy for lounging, especially since it’s a busy street and our neighbors in the back are frequently outside as well. The plan is to use the space for light computer work and lunch during the day, and for lounging with string lights at night.

I’ve thought about using artificial ivy for privacy, but I’m unsure how it will look during the winter months. In the fourth picture, we’ve already set up three IKEA privacy dividers, zip-tied to the railing, but extending this to cover the entire terrace would be too expensive (each divider is $100, so that would add up to over $1,000).

We’d like privacy up to about the height of the railing, just enough to block the view from street level while we’re sitting. Does anyone have suggestions for something that would look nice, work well with Northeast weather, and be renter-friendly? We’re open to any ideas that balance aesthetics with practicality!
