The current configuration of our kitchen island leaves something to be desired. The angle cuts into the living room space and barstools are a challenge because of the walkway space. I’ve gotten quotes and I can utilize the same granite slab and convert it to a slightly smaller rectangular island that runs parallel to the long run of the kitchen. Thoughts on the change?

Also note: the large closet you see is not a pantry/part of the kitchen but holds the water heater/hvac.

While you are at it, you might consider adding pendant lights for the island. It seems pretty dark in that area.

This is obviously extra…but if you had the funding, raising the ceiling in that area would help open it up. It looks like the ceiling around it is higher up.

My brother did it in his kitchen and living room and it looks so much more spacious and homey.

Also, swapping out the granite for a lighter color OR (cheaper option) painting those cabinets (although the wood is quite nice) would also liven the area.

I think the island, like you said, could be smaller. Rectangular would be a nice option.

I know what I put above is much more than you were asking but you were talking about adding lighting so if you ever felt like expanding the ceiling you’d obviously want to do that BEFORE adding lighting.
