Suggestions to zhuzh up the space around the fireplace?

We have this lovely fireplace with an additional space to the right for the TV. Hoping to make the fireplace more of a focal point. I was thinking of painting the shelves/frame and adding a big piece of art above. Any suggestions? Thank you!
