The weather’s slowly getting better and we need some picnic roses to have now that things are slowly opening back up. I told myself that I would drink more roses this season and that’s what inspired this slew of wines that I am choosing to write about today.

**Las Jaras, Superbloom:** A carbonic cofermented blend of Rhone varietals, specifically: 16% Roussane, 14% Mourvèdre, 16% Grenache Noir, 10% Grenache Blanc, 27% Marsanne, 7% Picpoul Blanc, 10% Carignan for the 2020 vintage. Juice is split into separate tanks, cold macerated for 5-14 days with spontaneous fermentation and blended post ferment, zero/zero cuvee. Purchased from Wine Therapy in Manhattan.

Notes of watermelon, strawberry kiwi, cotton candy and a spicy yet floral tinge on the nose, it’s full of great fruit and complex within its certain range of aromas. Medium bodied, weighted yet texture, medium (reined in) acid as well. Flavor wise, we’re talking crushed cherries, watermelon galore, morning dew, and a very clean mineral foundation that cleanses the palate. Honestly, as most of my discord friends and I would say, “this slaps”, but in layman’s terms, it’s really good and I am satisfied with this purchase.

**Gut Oggau, Maskerade Rose:** Mystery field blend, partly skin-fermented, partly direct-pressed. Blended and spontaneously fermented and then aged in bigger wooden barrels. This is made using vineyards recently acquired that are under the process of being converted to biodynamic farming. Purchased from Astor Wines & Spirits in Manhattan (my workplace).

This nose is pure dark fruit, we’re talking black cherry, prunes, blackberry, violets and lavender essences as well, the aromas are shy for sure and are hiding deep in the glass but it is nice to smell. On the palate, it’s all soft spices, crushed strawberries, black cherry and zingy blueberries. Medium acidity that pops on the palate like pop rocks, not too much tannin to speak of here. Despite a wine that hasn’t come into its full nature at this time, it doesn’t mean this doesn’t have a specific definition to it. It’s full of electricity, it’s fun, flirtatious and strikingly potent. I would not be surprised if this was a coferment of red and white grapes like the Superbloom but this is mystery fun!

**Alfredo Maestro, Amanda:** 100% Garnacha Tinto, 30-90 vines, fermented in steel vat with wild yeasts, around 20 hours of skin contact, raised in tank with the winter temperatures naturally clarifying the finished wine. Purchased at Wine Therapy in Manhattan.

Aromas of watermelon rind, tart and tangy cranberry, tangerine, rich earth, strawberries too, it’s a fun nose. On the palate, it is all high electric acid, a fuller bodied dark rose that brings forth tons of white peppery spice, blood orange, cranberry, watermelon, and flinty minerality. There are more gritty tannins here that make this rose feel like there is some briny character to it, some volatile acidity does play a role in that but it’s not overwhelming. This is full of rich and intense flavors that are really great for pairing with meals.

What a wonderful selection of roses to taste through (over the course of a few days). The Superbloom is chock full of tangy and zesty fruit with medium balanced acid with a clean mineral finish. I was personally disappointed with Las Jaras’ Glou Glou but this was way better for sure.

The Gut Oggau was probably my personal favorite of the bunch. Despite it being a wine that describes itself as a stranger hiding behind a mask, I felt it showed a lot of character that isn’t fully defined as of yet but you can make out the beauty of the juice already and it will only stand to get better as they become more acquainted with the land.

As for the Amanda, it was a ripper with bright, tart and almost briny acid with very engaging tannins expected from a darker rose. There’s nice earthy qualities that compliment the fruit and slight pepperyness. It is an intense rose compared to the other two and would fair well with tapas as the Jose Pastor write up says or in the case which I had it, a beef patty and fries. Yum!

I have the Maskerade Rose (2020) stashed away for a hot summers day. Cant wait to try this years vintage, as I was blown away about the 2019. Also, 1 liter of pure blizz for that price point? Come one!
