A short stroll from the shores of Neusideler See you can stumble across Weingut Koppitsch, a winery ran by husband and wife duo Maria & Alexandre. With over 500 years of winemaking experience in his family, Alex’s took over production in 2011. The duo practice Rudolf Steiner’s biodynamic principles, putting emphasis on low intervention in both the vineyard and cellar.
Ret belongs to the winery’s ‘fun’ line of wines, which are all highly pleasurable easy drinkers. This wine is composed of 80% Zweigelt and 20% St Laurent. Vinification included destemming, fermentation of skins for 6 days, and 5mg of sulphur added at bottling. No additives or temperature control were used in the process.
This wine was full of cherry, cranberry and spice. Nice acidity and soft tannins help balance out all of the juiciness that this wine has to offer. There was also a small amount of earthiness found, which aided in rounding out the wine. Most of the bottle was gone before we even noticed, and we were left wanting more by the end. Alex & Maria’s aim was that the wines in the fun range ‘make you happy’, and it certainly delivered.

Had this for the first time a couple months ago and it was great. Bought another bottle a week ago and it was completely fucked. Reeked of rotten egg, tasted ok but flat. Had to drain pour the whole bottle. Still, I’d get it again (but preferably from a shop close enough to be able to exchange it if I got another bad bottle).

His prices skyrocketed this vintage, and not just from tariffs. Anybody remember when this was a $15 bottle? (Oh yeah, that was last year)
