  1. Pierre Frick Fischbach Pinot Noir 2021

Color: light ruby, quite translucent, slight hint of garnet at the core

Nose: rested 30 mins and still quite tightly wound – prominent volatile acidity and still sight reductiveness dominate even after air, backed up by a highly green and stemmy profile showing light florals, rose hips, persimmon, strawberry, and a faint element of spice verging on gingerbread

Palate: body is moderate minus, with bright, fresh acid and surprisingly ample tannin which feels well integrated and structurally compelling – on the palate the wine introduces a soft and elegant texture which gives the overall experience some focus and credibility, things start to feel recognizable as Pinot Noir – showing notes of cherry skins, pomegranate, wet stones, some slight graphite, and salted plums – the finish is extremely perfumey and coats the mouth in an almost oily way, demonstrating some deep tones of roses, red apple skin, and sandalwood, fading slowly and elegantly from the mouth

I haven’t had anything from Frick in about 4 years, and was excited to try this. I understand why bottlings like these are controversial, as the first whiffs I took were a bit glaringly out of balance and dirty.

With that said, it shouldn’t be understated just how well the wine cleans up with air. This feels recognizable as Alsatian PN but still offers so much intrigue and objective quality to nullify any worries one might have about its low intervention production.

Paid €22 for this from a fellow merchant here in Berlin and will likely go back to grab another two bottles to save for later this year. If anyone who likes the low intervention side of the spectrum has the opportunity to pick this up, I would highly recommend doing so.

He is one of the pioneers of natural wines in Alsace and a france. Very well known in that region. If you like his wine, and your merchant has it, try the wines by Catherine Riss, or Kumpf Meyer…
