Johan Vineyards NILS Pinot Noir 2019 Van Duzor Corridor AVA Willamette Valley, Oregon
I’ve samples and sold many Johan wines through my store, but their NILS Pinot is a first for me.
Pours darker than normal for the variety, with more purple reflections than red.
Flavor is full of violets, crunchy dark berries, ripe black cherry, and a damp soil-like minerality. A light toastiness from the oak lingers after swallowing.
The palate is medium bodied with medium+ tannins and medium+ acidity. Fleshy and pure.
Overall: The tannin and darker fruit character really make this Pinot unique, but the wine still comes through as silky, making the drinkability off the charts. I appreciate the delicate use of oak (I can’t stand oaky Pinot).
Highly recommended.

Morgan (the winemaker/FM) and her team are some of the nicest people in the world. Here in the Willamette Valley, that vineyard has an almost mythical quality to it that is entirely deserved. Now that they brought Nathan on to manage the vineyard, I think we’re just getting into the golden age of what they will accomplish. With the funding and recent purchase by Cowhorn, I imagine Johan will become more of a household name.
