Clotaire Michal’s very old Gamay. Opened 20 minutes beforehand, the first nose was very Syrah evocative, with a southern touch to it, which is nothing surprising as Clotaire spent 5 years in Cornas working with Thierry Allemand. Forget carbonic maceration Gamay, this Beaujolais-Villages is a wine of concentration and depth. The first nose was very Syrah style, with a smokey, aromatic herbs nose. It developed to stewed red fruits, the palate kept this slight smokey note, a very rich Gamay that requires time and a small plate to go with it. It kept some nice acidity, that breaks down the rich texture that this cuvée gives out. An interesting take on Beaujolais, as the classic glouglou style gives way to a more complex and pairing style wine. If you like strong and structured Gamay, in the style of Michel Guignier (with a bit less VA) Clotaire Michal’s wines are to try.
